TO "V" OR NOT TO "V"

Is it just me, or does being married make you care less about Valentines day? Before my husband and I were married, we'd usually do something sweet and romantic, but last night, the following conversation made me wonder if being married for almost a year had unknowingly taken some of that spark away from 14th Feb...

Nicole: It's Valentine's Day tomorrow.
Me: Is it?
Nicole: Yes.
Me: Oh. (Looking over at my husband). FYI, I haven't got anything for you.
Husband: Me neither.
Me: Well, it doesn't matter. It's not like we need to try any more.
My husband: Yup.

I was surprised when I blurted out "It's not like we need to try anymore" - what am I talking about? So now I've got my Carrie Bradshaw hat on: why does being married make you care less about Valentines Day?

Really, at the time of typing this, I'm not bothered that we're not having heart-shaped pancakes with strawberries and maple syrup for breakfast this year, whether or not we have a lunch reservation, or a side by side massage booked at East Day Spa today.

Perhaps it's because other things are now taking priority. Like getting a Rug Doctor to clean the carpet after two spills last night. Or looking adoringly over at our new Sierra dining table in white for the hundreth time. Or Googling stuff like "how long to cook baby back spare ribs?"

It just seems to me that there are too many other things going on at the moment and neither of us seem to feel the need to celebrate today. Perhaps that's the natural lifecycle of a relationship once you're married. At the end of the day, as long as the relationship is a very happy one, that's all that counts!

LET'S GROW OLD TOGETHER!

UPDATED: After I spent good time contemplating and writing about this, it turns out this post may as well be void. What was meant to be a quick trip into town to run errands resulted in somehow getting a massage together, a bite for lunch (only at Burgerfuel) and an ice cream on the way home. The invisible Valentine's force must have been hard at work, and boy did we get sucked into it. Overall, it was nothing flash, but kinda romantic... just how I like things. Five stars for living simply.
